Part 1: 1:1 – 3:21

Study Guide

  • Before You Read – Pray and ask the LORD for understanding of His Word.

  • Content – Paul wrote this letter to the Church in Ephesus to make Christians more aware of their position in Christ and to motivate them to draw upon their spiritual power in order to live their daily lives.
  • Author – The Apostle Paul.
  • Date – Around A.D. 60.
  • Recipients – The church in Ephesus (and possibly circulated to the other Asian churches).
  • What’s Mark About? – A big-picture view of Jesus, the church, our place in Christ, and how to reflect Christ’s life in our own relationships.
  • What’s The Point of Ephesians? – Paul gives the Ephesian church courage to face their problems, addresses the issue of unity within the Ephesian church, and gives instruction on Christian practices.

Overview: Jesus Christ sacrificed His life to bring about forgiveness of sins and also brought the good news about how we can be saved.  He prays that the Holy Spirit will help the Christians in Ephesus be wise and understand what it means to know God. God saves all who have faith in Christ.  All who believe in Jesus are united in one body. Paul outlines his mission to bring the good news to the Gentiles and he prays that the power of Christ will be at work in the church.

Overview: Paul encourages the followers of Christ in Ephesus to live in unity and to serve the whole body of Christ, the church, by using the special gifts the Holy Spirit has given them. He also offers advice for various relationships and for fighting evil as children of the Light.

2. Choose one of these things from 4:4-6 and describe in your own words what it means. 
3. List the things that are part of a Christian’s “old life” and list the “rules” for the “new life” (4:17-5:5).
4. What is the hardest thing about trying to live this new life? 
5. What do you think about the letter’s description of how husbands & wives ought to relate to each other? (5:21-33) Why?
6. In your opinion, what is the one most important thing in any relationship? – trust/loyalty, love, equality/fairness, openness & good communication, forgiveness, or other?
7. In light of the current protests against racial injustice & police brutality towards African Americans, what are your thoughts about 6:5-9? What is your understanding of slavery in Jesus’ time?
